#REPLACE NEW SSD FOR OS X UPGRADE#
If Apple doesn’t require an APFS upgrade for Fusion drives, you should have the option to upgrade later, which would simply require booting into the Recovery Disk on your Mac (restart and then hold down Command-R) and launching Disk Utility from there, and then following steps 2 to 5 above. Select the boot partition in the list at left.Disk Utility also supports external hard drive conversion, but there’s no advantage, so I’d recommend against it at this time. If you want to upgrade an external SSD to APFS, you can do so via Disk Utility. Connect the SSD to your Mac system (either externally using a SATA-to-USB adapter or internally in the system). Before you can use your new SSD with your Mac computer, you have to initialize and partition it.
However, we expect that because there’s no upgrade choice for APFS with High Sierra, the Fusion upgrade will also be mandatory when it ships. If you have upgraded to OS X 10.11, go to our new guide for El Capitan and later. Youll probably need to use Disk Utility to format the new drive. We’re focusing this guide on moving an existing installation of Windows 10 with apps, settings, and your personal files to a new drive to replace a hard drive or for backup purposes, but you can clone any drive with any data. Put the new drive into the USB enclosure and plug it into your MacBook Pro. Apple hasn’t said exactly when a Fusion APFS upgrade will be ready. Once you complete the steps, the main volume on the drive should expand using the unallocated space making the size of the storage bigger. Apple isn’t automatically upgrading Fusion drives, the combination of SSD and hard disk drive (HDD) that it’s popularized for higher-capacity systems, because SSDs remain quite expensive above 512GB.
